Knowledge, tenacity and proven experience

More than 25 years representing Massachusetts businesses. Admitted to the Massachusetts Bar and licensed to practice before the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, he began his career in 1998 at Belford & Stone in Fall River, concentrating on civil litigation and business representation.

His work ranges from seven-figure contract disputes and multi-state asset acquisitions to business formations and ownership transitions. In one multi-party matter, nearly 30 arbitration sessions over about two and a half years ended with insurance coverage secured for his client — who later returned for business formation work.

Common Questions

Straight answers, Massachusetts law.

A modern plan frequently includes a revocable living trust paired with a pour-over will, plus a healthcare proxy, a durable power of attorney and, in some cases, advance directives. The right mix depends on your circumstances, so it is worth speaking with an attorney before you decide.

A will must go through probate, which means court involvement and often a delay before anyone can act. A revocable trust allows private administration outside probate, and the trustee can act right away. A will usually costs less up front; a trust often reduces cost and delay later.

Your estate passes under the state's intestacy laws rather than your wishes — generally to your children first, then parents, then siblings or other relatives. A probate case is still required, and the court appoints a personal representative.

Creditors generally have one year from the date of death to bring claims, so estates are often kept open for that period. Many take several months to over a year, depending on complexity, asset types and whether disputes arise.

The court looks at the best interests of the child and the totality of the circumstances. Continuity of care — who has been consistently involved in the child's day-to-day life — is often among the most important factors.

Alimony is driven first by the need of the spouse seeking it and the ability to pay of the other spouse. If both are present, the court often looks at the income differential between the parties in setting amount and duration.
